Origin of the Picoku

A picoku is a micro-poem consisting of two disparate thoughts that, when juxtaposed, create a unique mental image. The first thought must be three syllables. The second thought must be two syllables. Ideally, the first syllable of each thought should be emphasized. The term picoku is derived from pico, the metric notation for 10-12 (originally from the italian piccolo, meaning small) and haiku, a formulaic Japanese poem.

This form of poetry was invented in August 2008 by Lydia Bobbitt and Deborah Mabey (notice both of their names fit the picoku formula).
